Dear Sir or Madam,

valuable material data – painstakingly determined in laboratories and test facilities – is still frequently shared as PDF files and then stored in unstructured archives. Typical examples include:

  • Sampling results for products
  • Acceptance test certificates
  • Laboratory data from external test labs
  • Substance declarations and hazardous substance documentation

Distribution works – but once filed, this information is neither searchable nor usable by systems. It thus recedes from the organization’s active knowledge base and from the value-creation process, and is not available for optimizing products, processes and sustainability assessments.

From Distribution to Usability

For material information to be truly usable within a company, it must be available in digital, machine-readable form. Digitization at the point of origin – directly in laboratory, testing and ERP systems – is far more effective than retroactive capture from PDF archives. This requires reliable, standardized data exchange between all parties along the value chain.

MatliX: Pragmatic, Standardized Data Exchange

As part of a VDA working group, an industry-neutral, easy-to-use exchange format was developed that closes precisely this gap. The open specification is freely available on GitHub and enables direct, machine-readable exchange between ERP, PLM and laboratory systems.

Under the label MatliX – Material Lifecycle Information eXchange, we support our customers in practical implementation.
